192. Rebel with a Cause: The Process Leads To The Purpose

“Through suffering comes wisdom. Through surrender comes faith. Through resilience, comes hope. Keep going.”

– Rita Said

I am so excited about this conversation as I am welcoming longtime fitness family to the T&T mic, Gabriel (Gabs) Sandoval! Gabriel entered into the CrossFit world about the same time as I did, so we have seen the entire sport and culture grown and evolve from the ground up. Much like CrossFit, Gabriel shares his story as a rebel with a cause and how he trusted the process as it ultimately led him to his purpose. There are few things in life that are true, but one is for sure- almost nothing is as it seems. Gabriel played sports and was athletic in his past, but he had many twists and turns far from the gym before he was leading people on their fitness, health, and wellness journey. His story is one of process, loss, resilience, and major pivots- knowing that he wouldn’t be where he is now without each piece of the breakdown and breakthrough. If you are looking for an inspiring story wondering how it will all shake out for you, tune into this convo. It’s reminder for everyone to keep the faith, keep showing up, and to lean back into what you initially loved. It will work out.

This one is a video, so be sure to check us out on You Tube!

Highlights:

Breakdowns and breakthroughs. Becoming a fitness pro after an anti-fitness life. Loss, faith, resilience, and the clarity that comes. Being the youngest. Be at the right place at the right time. Taking on challenges and leading by example. Not having it all figured out.

Gabriel (Gabs) Sandoval

Owner/Head Coach @ CrossFit MOB

From a young age I always enjoyed being active. I started wrestling when I was six years old and continue to do so for about 10 years. Once I got to middle school and high school I started to play football and basketball and I also got into skateboarding and snowboarding.

After high school, I moved to the mountains so I could snowboard more. I did that for about a year and then decided I wanted to go back to college so I moved back to Denver. During my time in college is when I really got into physical exercise and around that same time as what I found CrossFit. That was about 13 years ago. I immediately fell in love with Crossfit and started coaching Crossfit as much as I could.

I graduated college in 2014 with my degrees in biology and chemistry. After that I worked in the medical field for a short period of time and then I got the opportunity to become a gym manager at a CrossFit gym so I did that. About a year and a half later I got an opportunity become a partial owner. In about five years ago, I got an opportunity to become the majority owner of Crossfit MOB, which I did.

We now have one of the bigger CrossFit gyms in the state of Colorado and I can see I truly love what I do. Health and fitness are my passion and leading people in that direction is why I get up and do what I do every day.

Ty Sondag is the co-founder and CEO of Denver Pub Crawl. When he’s not crawling, you can find him traveling, running, and lending a hand at beer, wine, and food festivals.

Logan Lakos is the Co-Founder and COO of Denver Pub Crawl. He grew up in Austin, TX, and has been taking advantage of the outdoors Boulder and Denver has to offer for almost eight years now.

What is Denver Pub Crawl?Maybe you’re local and don’t know the best bars in Denver. Maybe you’re on vacation, or new in town, and want to be introduced to Denver nightlife. Denver Pub Crawl is an all-access party pass that grants you exclusive access to drink specials at each of our venues, as we “crawl” from one fun bar to the next. Crawling is a laid-back night time experience where hosts take ticket-holders bar hopping in Downtown Denver’s Ballpark Neighborhood, LoDo.

Denver Pub Crawl:How does a pub crawl work?Grab a ticket and get ready! First, you meet a Denver Pub Crawl Host at the starting location. They get you checked in, introduce you to the group and make sure you have everything you need for the crawl. You’ll grab a drink and get to know your new friends for the evening. Before you know it, the host will announce that it’s time to close out and head to the next bar. You’ll hit 4 or more bars during your crawl, and the host will let you know once you’ve reached the last. Some of our bars offer food, and there are usually food trucks along the way. Sometimes, your host will initiate games for the group if the vibe is right.  Denver Pub Crawl works directly with our partner bars in LoDo to give you the very best drink specials in Denver every single week.

Andrew Dana, Call Your Mother Bagel DeliOwners chef Daniela Moreira and Chief Doughboi, Andrew Dana, began this wild and wonderful journey at farmer’s markets in DC. After opening our flagship shop in Park View in the Fall of 2018, it was clear that folks in our community needed MORE CARBS! Since then, we’ve assembled a dream team and opened up several new locations throughout DC, Maryland and alllll the way across the country in Denver, Colorado! We’re on a mission to spread #bagellove to everyone with an appetite and our next stop might be your back yard (figuratively speaking)! We don’t take ourselves too seriously, but we’re serious about bagels. With a *chef’s kiss* of honey, they’re somewhere between a classic NY-style bagel and the sweeter, Montreal-style bagels from our friends up North. Andrew is Jewish; the nostalgia of family traditions and the eclectic food from their childhoods were the genesis of our menu.  Food is important, but people are the most important ingredient. In addition to being a phenomenal place to eat, we aim to be great neighbors and one of the best places to work!  Some of our longtime partners include: Urban Alliance to offer career training to area youth, AYUDA to help transform the lives of underserved immigrants, Food Rescue and Martha’s Table to do our part to end hunger in DC. We’re committed to making a positive impact in our community and using our platform to raise money and awareness for causes we care deeply about.

“Think twice before you speak, because your words and influence will plant the seed of either success or failure in the mind of another.”

184. No Lasting Love, No Problem: Why we still can’t stop watching reality dating shows!

“I’m trying to build an empire, because after this, I cannot get a normal job.”

-Nicole Polizzi (aka Snookie)

Hi all, KO, your host here- this is a fun one today! We’ll be breaking down the paradoxical nature of our fascination with reality dating shows despite their lack of long-lasting romantic connections. What keeps us hooked, even in the absence of enduring love stories? We’ll unpack some of the most popular reality dating TV shows including; The Bachelor/Bachelorette, Love is Blind, Married At First Sight- and more. What are the stats, who is still together, and why do we watch – all the different series if none of them really work?! These shows are some of my favorite “escapism” indulgences:), but will I keep watching if it’s just about becoming an influencer and not about finding love?… I’m not sure that I will! Will you? Would you go on one seeking love (or fame)?  Listen into the end where I share my own experience being recruited to join one of these shows- a little inside info on the process that provided for some deeper thinking, I actually appreciated. Love or entertainment, you decide!

109. Open Mic: Special Olympics 2

“Competing at the highest level is not about winning. It’s about preparation, courage, understanding and nurturing your people, and heart. Winning is the result.”

―Joe Torre

I am so PUMPED to welcome back The Special Olympics of Colorado to the T&T Mic! Everyone is back out in the mix of the world and The Special Olympics of Colorado (SOCO) are no different. They are out playing, competing, and fundraising to make the ship sail! Megan Scremin, CEO, and Tim Sharpe, Athlete Of The Year 2001 and current Fitness Coordinator, join me in this conversation about all things 2021 and they share SOCO updates and events coming up soon. My friend Paula and I did the Polar Plunge a few months ago and it was A BLAST! SOCO does an amazing job facilitating fun and unique fundraising events that are not only well orchestrated, but bring together an incredible group of like-minded humans and supporters… Paula and I walked away with new friends and a fresh enthusiasm to be involved with the SOCO community!! Be sure to check out The PLANE PULL coming Aug 28th and Sept 18th– Paula, myself, and a crew of our friends will be there too. Bet we can pull a plane faster than you:) Enjoy this fun-check-in with myself, Megan, and Tim as we highlight the impact of SOCO, coming events, and the heart space that leads their mission and values- what an amazing community! If you are an athlete that wants to get involved, a parent, or someone that want to volunteer check out their website for all details- you won’t regret it!!
