63. Varsity Men: Vulnerable & Empathetic

Focusing on the fellas today… finally! We often cover equality on T&T and most of the time it is through the female narrative, because I am a woman after all. Today, we are talking all things men, their emotions, what it means to “be a man” and how that meaning in itself is evolving, thank goodness. I have noted the Netflix documentary, The Masks They Live In, many times as it’s an excellent example of the discussion and awareness of American society pushing masculinity on our boys that inevitably destroys them (in short). This a much longer conversation that Kris taps into as he exemplifies a modern, evolved man. He is the father of two boys, successful businessman, entrepreneur, speaker, and mission driven to update the conversation, awareness, and perception of “what it means to be a man”. 2020 has been a crazy year to say the least, there is no better time than now to question a better way, genuinely get back to your authentic self, and work to further evolve on the personal front. Our guys need the same empathy and space that our girls do. Kris kicks off the convo with a personal childhood story that sets the tone for the rest of the conversation. He is vulnerable, open, and willing to help and /or advise anyone that asks. This is an awesome cast for everyone, particularly parents of young boys. Enjoy!

Highlights

What it means to “Be A Man”. A boy’s and a man’s perspective. Men’s emotion, vulnerability, empathy, sympathy, awareness. Stigma. Questioning a better way. Working with, teaching, and raising happy, self-assured men. Life evolution and awakening. Making lemonade from lemons. Entrepreneurship, community, and embracing self-love to make the world a better place.

Recognition – Ownership – Work – Growth (ROWG)
Going ROWG is a process of

1. Recognizing both your weaknesses AND strengths.

2. Taking ownership of who you are, both good and bad, and letting go of any blame or excuses.

3. Putting in the work to overcome your weaknesses and leverage your strengths.

4. Experiencing the growth, and gaining greater success and happiness.

Look and feel like a stud.

Only 101 shirts sold.
We limit our production to 101 prints per design, and 4 designs being available at a time. When a product sells out, it sells out for good. So, if you find a shirt that resonates with you, grab it fast before it is gone.

62. Adult Health and Wellness, PG18

“The greatest of follies is to sacrifice health for any other kind of happiness. “

-Arthur Schopenhauer

Oh, this was a fun one and the FIRST cast I give a mild adult warning to, this is more for the ears of an 18+ year old… but, if we are really honest, you could walk down any average high school hallway and hear far more aggressive speak (if you can crack the millennial language code #botox).

On this cast I welcome, Connie Pretula, a Certified Nutritional Practitioner, Menopause Mentor, Burning Man enthusiasts (does that could if you’ve gone at least once? I think so:), and all-around specialists in having fun, enjoying life, and seeking balance in all that she pursues. Connie is bold, open, and experienced and her willingness to share and be honest made for an amazing conversation that everyone can learn something from. Including the “healthiest” alcohol drink you can order, you guessed it, TEQUILA, and she shares why. Connie’s journey is a varied one, including a wealth of corporate experience, a body building contest at 51, and pivot into the entrepreneurial world, again, Burning Man (completely SOBER!?!), and all the angles on wellness and nutrition (for life, not just competition) that you can pack in between. Wellness is a balance of all things and Connie is the living proof: fitness, nutrition, sex, mentality, community, spiritually, and continuous evolution. Let’s just say a consultation with Connie is a one stop shop, haha… but seriously. Enjoy!

The all-natural “moisturizer” that Connie recommends. Fellas take note as well, it’s a team effort… Too much? Middle school is that way–>

Highlights

Questioning a better way… on ALL levels. Nutrition and wellness and sexuality. Libations, liberation, and being ok talking about our bodies and minds changing as we age. It’s never too late or too early to improve your life, try something new, or start over. Open your mind, your heart, and chase what you really want to do. Full body wellness and varsity spirit… and spirits.

61. Elevate Your Spark

“I am so happy and grateful now that I realize that I have the time to accomplish everything I want to accomplish in my day.”

That is the affirmation that Donna gave me mid cast to elevate my spark… and it’s working:)! I am pumped to welcome Donna Deteau to the T&T mic, she is a connect from one of my fave former Grandview High School laxers, Maddie, also a T&T guest herself (Ep. 17)- you know I love connects of connects! This is an awesome cast, packed full of things you can do right now to elevate your spark, dial in your goals, and sharpen your edge. Get the mind right and universe, body, and the people you keep around you will follow. Donna lays down some small, but powerful skills you can practice on the daily without over committing to a major routine. If you are an athlete looking to elevate your game, a business person looking to make more money and see the opportunity in front of you, or if your someone looking to better your communication and relationships with people (and yourself)- this one is for you. We discuss goal setting, life skills, mindset, and the power of affirmations. We are what we think. Take notes on this one and follow up with Donna accordingly if you want to go further- I highly recommend it! Change your mind, change your life!

Highlights

Mindset and the power of thoughts. Elevating your spark, on all levels. Practical skills you can do right now to dial in your thinking. Affirmations and goals. Intentions and knowing one’s self. Community and conscious awareness. Communication and relationships. Making money and being ok with abundance. Believing that anything is possible.

Donna Deteau

Donna was born in Texas but at the age of 8, when she and her family visited Colorado for the first time, she realized that Colorado was her “heart home.” Every day, she expresses deep gratitude to be able to live in the physical place of her heart home.

Donna spent 1/3 of her life in corporate America, 1/3 in nonprofits and 1/3 as an entrepreneur. She founded 2 other successful businesses before she became a Success Building Coach: a catering biz and a renovation biz.

She shared with me that when she was catering, she thought, “this is my purpose…to make events, parties and holidays easier and worry-free for others”. Then, when she was renovating, she thought “this is my purpose in life…to design and create living spaces for people who want a better home but don’t know how to go about creating it”.

But it was when she began coaching that she experienced true passion, jumping out of bed every single day so excited for the day to begin. She told me “I am so grateful that coaching others found me because now I’m in service to others every day of my life. My clients get the tools to understand who they really are — their true, authentic selves. And they get the tools to get exactly what they want, whether that be earn enough to retire early, purchase and live in their dream home, create a relationship and/or family, travel the world 6 months out of the year, or simply earn a 7-figure income.”

“Coaching”, she says, “is the life that I was born to do.”

60. Open Mic: Wholly Kicks

“Where there is no hope, it is incumbent on us to invent it.”

–Albert Camus

I’m so xcited about this T&T Open Mic session because we are finally discussing a topic I have been waiting to unpack for a while, those experiencing homelessness. In times like these, we have more people than ever experiencing homelessness or are one paycheck away from being in that position. This is a very real reality and it’s something that anyone of us could face at any time. Today I sit down with Tyg Taylor, the Founder and Executive Director of Wholly Kicks. Wholly Kicks is a 501(c)(3) that supports those experiencing homelessness and economic disparity in North Aurora, Colorado and surrounding communities.  Wholly Kicks provides new shoes, love, encouragement and mentoring to those living on the street, in the neighborhood, and in the public-school system. Tyg is a long-time pastor (over 28 years) and left his church to move to the heart of Aurora to not just help a community in need, but genuinely be a part of it. He knew it was important to be amongst the community he wanted to serve, so he moved in and established Wholly Kicks. Tyg has an incredible story of loss, triumph, and hope. He breakdown so many pieces around homelessness, including language, understanding, approaching someone in that situation, and more. I just wish I would have had this convo years ago (like ALL the open mics!!). Empathy and understanding are at the base of a better future. This cast is really for anyone and everyone, we all need to understand each other more and the sooner we do, the sooner we can get to a more peaceful space. We don’t often get to walk in each other’s shoes, but if we can have a conversation and listen, we’ll at minimum be reminded that we are all human, seeking many of the same things: safety, shelter, love, and support. Home really is where the heart is. Broaden your perspective and extend kindness- always.

Tyg”er” Taylor

is the founder and Executive Director of Wholly Kicks, a 501(c)(3) that supports those experiencing homelessness and economic disparity in North Aurora, Colorado and surrounding communities.  Wholly Kicks provides new shoes, love, encouragement and mentoring to those living on the street, in the neighborhood, and in the public-school system.

For 28 years, Tyg lead an Evangelical Lutheran Church in America congregation in Monument Colorado and spent much of his time working among those living on the street in Colorado Springs. In January of 2019 he moved into the diverse neighborhood of North Aurora to live a new season of life on “mission.”  Tyg now “works” as a street pastor along the Colfax Corridor, filling his days with interactions with those whom he loves most in the world.

Tyg”er” is a creator of fun cocktails, a cooker of well plated food, a grunty lifter of things CrossFit, a teacher of street things,  a so-so theologian, and at least a few other things.

WHOLLY KICKS

WHO WE ARE: We are here not for income, but for outcome

Wholly Kicks is a non-profit organization whose presence in Aurora, Colorado, and the Denver Metro area, exists for the purpose of “walking with” those in impoverished areas or those at risk of or, experiencing homelessness. Through the distribution of new shoes and socks, the focus of Wholly Kicks is to mentor and build relationships in “walking with” individuals who for varied reasons, find themselves experiencing economic disparity.
